Businessman launches mayoral bid

In the heart of the Abbotsford housing project where he grew up, multimillionaire businessman Tom Knox declared his candidacy in the 2007 Philadelphia mayoral race yesterday. The announcement was held in front of a Tastykake distribution center. Knox appeared with his wife, one of his sons and their Louis Vuitton-leashed dog, Lily.

Some students got a taste of poverty yesterday at a "hunger banquet" held in Houston Hall. As attendees walked into the room, they were handed a card that placed them into one of three socioeconomic groups for the night: high income, middle income or low income.


Panel writers honor prof who inspired them

For four Penn alumni writers in journalism and non-fiction, the memory of a beloved professor is reason enough to return to campus every year. The writers discussed their careers in a panel discussion at the Kelly Writers House on Saturday. The event, which was standing-room only, celebrated Penn professor Nora Magid.

Lots of Penn students dream of big futures, but members of the Penn Nanotech Society are dreaming on a much, much smaller scale. Yesterday, the group joined with the Penn Nano/Bio Interface Center to host "Nano Day," a series of presentations designed to dispel myths and increase awareness of tiny technology.

Wharton professor Justin Wolfers is not ashamed to admit that he knows nothing. In fact, he hoped that his audience would walk away from his research presentation on the death penalty knowing nothing, too. As part of a criminology lecture series, Wolfers spoke to students and colleagues in Huntsman Hall on Friday about the effects of the death penalty as a crime deterrent.
