100 years ago this month, Penn’s Mask and Wig Club was the first organization to release an electrical recording that used the then-brand-new Western Electric system.

The Office of the President and Office of the Provost awarded its inaugural Draw Down the Lightning Grants to 12 interdisciplinary projects, funding initiatives that aim to tackle global challenges. 

The eight-day conference series aimed “to promote research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and foster scientific exchange between researchers, practitioners, scientists, students, and engineers across the entirety of AI and its affiliated disciplines.”

College and Wharton seniors Tej Patel and Sridatta Teerdhala are among the 36 Marshall Scholars selected this year from among 983 candidates. 

During the talk — which was co-sponsored by the Andrea Mitchell Center for the Study Of Democracy and the Government and Politics Association — DePasquale and Khanna spoke about civic engagement ahead of the upcoming election and answered questions from roughly 50 attendees.

The talk, which is part of Penn's Africana Lecture Series, marks 60 years since the work of the civil rights movement in 1964.

Penn's research team will be led by Annenberg School of Communications professor Sarah Jackson, alongside Brian and Randi Schwartz University Professor Desmond Upton Patton.
