Harvard announced in August that it is adding women’s rugby as a varsity sport, becoming the first Ivy school to do so. Given the rise of rugby nationally, and its status as a safer alternative to football, other universities could soon follow suit.

Eugenia Garvin, a first-year resident in Penn’s Department of Emergency Medicine, conducted research indicating that cleaning and caring for vacant lots makes residents feel safer and may also reduce crime. The study was published in the journal “Injury Prevention” in August 2012.

Talk of bras and parachute jumpsuits replaced the usual Wall Street chatter in Huntsman Hall Tuesday night. Wharton Women held one of their most popular annual events, Dressing for Success, to raise money for the charity Career Wardrobe and to educate Penn students on appropriate business attire. The House voted down a Republican bill that would have allowed 55,000 new green cards to be given to foreigners who graduate with a master’s degree or doctorate from an American university in any of the STEM fields.

Ahn Cheol-soo, who has degrees from both Wharton and Engineering, announced last month that he is running in the presidential election in South Korea to take place on Dec. 19. Ahn’s daughter attended Penn as well.
