Fall 2013 Undergraduate Assembly Elections

A facelift for Franklin Field

Despite graduating from Wharton in 1965, George Weiss never really left Penn. A generous benefactor of the University and many charitable projects, the charter trustee has stayed intimately involved in the school's affairs. His more than $60 million of donations to the University has already garnered two institutions bearing his name: the Weiss Tech House and the Weiss Center for International Financial Research at Wharton.


It’s the first thing overly eager pre-frosh see as they plan their first semester at Penn, and it’s the last thing seniors check before they are cleared to graduate. And in recent history, Penn InTouch, with its archaic design and clunky interface, has been the shame and chagrin of every Penn student.

Women's lacrosse may have come up short of a national championship, but two of the team's seniors can now say they won their final collegiate contest. Becca Edwards and Kaitlyn Lombardo were selected by coach Karin Brower to represent Penn in the IWLCA/Under Armour North-South Senior All-Star game last Saturday.

When it comes to the running back position, the Class of 2013 recruits are only an added bonus to an already talented Penn backfield. "I think it's our deepest position, certainly on the offensive side of the ball," coach Al Bagnoli said. After bringing in five more skilled runners, Bagnoli is pleased with the depth of "experience and talent and different kinds of running styles" he has in his backfield.

University President Amy Gutmann and incoming Provost Vincent Price announced Shelley Berger as the 10th Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor. Berger will hold appointments in the School of Medicine's Department of Cell and Developmental Biology and the School of Arts and Sciences' Department of Biology.

The University was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as one of the country's top 25 companies, universities and municipalities that have found creative ways to run on renewable power. Ranked at No. 19, Penn was the only university to make the list.

This week, Computer World ranked Penn fourth in their national list of the 100 Best Places to Work in Information Technology. The University is also ranked first in the Mid-Atlantic region. "Our ranking is an indication of both the strong benefits that Penn provides to employees and of the vibrancy of the Penn IT community," ISC Vice President Robin Beck wrote in a statement, citing production of administrative and student products and services as one example.

Jake Cassman has a dream. "I want more than anything to be in a professional rock band, although I could also see myself as a producer if I learn how to record properly." A rising sophomore and prospective music and political science major, he plays the keyboard, sings and idolizes Matt Bellamy (the frontman of the band Muse) and is currently in the late writing process of his first rock opera.

If Penn Rowing hopes to soon reassert itself at the top of the Ivy League, it will have to do so with two new coaches. With both lightweight head coach Mike Irwin and heavyweight assistant coach Eric Carcich leaving their respective positions, the program has lost two key members of its crew.
