"For most, leadership is an acquired skill," said Michael Useem, director of the Wharton Leadership Center, during the preceptorial he hosted with University President Amy Gutmann yesterday. The preceptorial, entitled "Essence of Leadership," took place at 4:30 p.

The Penn basketball team sure kept the statisticians busy this weekend. After confirming that Dartmouth swept Penn for the first time since 1959 Friday, they revealed that Harvard's 66-60 win over the Quakers Saturday was its first at the Palestra since 1991.

Another weekend sweep at the Palestra is likely to leave Penn fans in consternation about the state of the program. Such has been the case after every bad outing at home, regardless of the context. But if anything, the way in which the Quakers lost demonstrated exactly what is wrong with the program right now.

While Penn students are expected to be proficient in English, no such requirement is made for their parents. To help with this dilemma, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions has been attempting to make the entire admissions process easier for prospective students' parents who are not fluent in English by providing admissions and financial-aid information in Spanish, one of the most common native languages for international students.

Two days ago, Philadelphia Newspapers LLC - publisher of Philadelphia's two dailies, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Philadelphia Daily News, as well as the printer of The Daily Pennsylvanian - filed for bankruptcy protection preventatively. The announcement, unfortunately, was not unexpected.

Penn junior 125-pound wrestler Rollie Peterkin likes trying new positions. Indeed, it was the reigning EIWA wrestler of the week's versatility on the mat that coach Rob Eiter credits in No. 11 Peterkin's 12-4 thrashing of Penn State's No. 13 Brad Pataky Friday.

A growing number of students are turning to social entrepreneurship, and groups are looking to fill that demand. The Wharton Dean's Undergraduate Advisory Board has made significant progress toward a secondary concentration in social entrepreneurship, but the Undergraduate Assembly and Student Committee on Undergraduate Education are looking to expand developments to the College curriculum.

W. Lax | Early goals set tone against Drexel, but Penn coach wants more

Junior Ali DeLuca knows that scoring early can give her team the confidence to overcome any first-game jitters. Thirty six seconds after the Penn women's lacrosse team started its 2009 season, DeLuca received a pass at the top of the crease from Courtney Lubbe to score the game's - and the season's - first goal.

In the first Ivy Round Robin two weeks ago, freshman foil Zane Grodman defeated Columbia's Kurt Getz by a score of 3-0 in 30 seconds. In yesterday's second round robin, hosted by Brown, Grodman recorded yet another 3-0 victory against another previous All-Ivy first teamer.

I love Pink Floyd. I'll shamelessly spend hours in my car on summer days listening to the British rock band. Give me a surround-sound system and the album Dark Side of the Moon, and I'll never complain about anything ever again. It's very easy for me to make connections between their lyrics and a number of situations, including the one between the district attorney's race in Philadelphia and the song Welcome to the Machine.

By JOE SANFILIPPO Staff Writer sanfilippo@dailypennsylvanian.com Although the drive back from Princeton, N.J., only took 40 minutes, the men's squash team's performance at the Collegiate Squash Association Team Championships this weekend undoubtedly made for a long ride home.

The December home invasion and sexual assault at 44th and Spruce streets sparked debate about security west of Penn's campus. But as Penn expands east toward Center City, the Division of Public Safety is planning for the new security challenges it will face on the other side of campus.

Philadelphia Newspapers Incorporated, which owns The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Philadelphia Daily News, Philly.com and Philadelphia Media Holdings - which prints The Daily Pennsylvanian - filed for bankruptcy yesterday. M. Hoops | Alex Barnett leads Dartmouth past Penn - again

The year was 1959. Dwight Eisenhower was president, Hawaii and Alaska were new states in the union and CBS' The Twilight Zone had just become a primetime staple in suburban living rooms everywhere. That year was also the last time that the Dartmouth men's basketball team swept Penn.

Brothers go 'All In For Alzheimer's"

Sigma Alpha Mu put all its chips on the table for Alzheimer's research yesterday. The fraternity, with the help of the Chi Omega and Sigma Kappa sororities, staged a large fundraising poker tournament in Houston Hall's Bodek Lounge. Students played to support Alzheimer's research for The Judy Fund, named after the grandmother of SAM brother Brian Gelfand.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of a famously controversial free speech incident involving Penn. No, I'm not speaking of how FBI agents observed club meetings during the 1970s or the theft of an entire run of The Daily Pennsylvanian in the early 1990s - it might be hard to imagine, but Penn was once a recurring backdrop for national debates about free speech.

W. Tennis | Everything is right with Wong

Jacqueline Wong was staring defeat in the face Sunday. Down one set and trailing 4-1 in the second against Maryland's Maggie Mackeever, the junior gazed at her opponent and only one thought crossed her mind: "Finish and never give up." That take-no-prisoners attitude paid off as Wong prevailed in dramatic fashion, winning the next five games to claim that set 6-4 and then winning 10-6 in the tiebreaker.

Italian 'Knight's Tale': Philosophy prof is knighted

Cristina Bicchieri isn't just the director of Penn's Philosophy, Politics and Economics program and a game-theory scholar. She's also an Italian knight. Bicchieri was knighted at the Italian consulate last June for merits in the arts and sciences. Many received the news with enthusiasm and congratulation.
