A Penn laboratory has successfully programmed the PR2 robot to scoop poop. “We wanted to do something difficult but utterly pedestrian, something that people could relate to,” third year Computer Science doctoral student Anthony Cowley said.


StartUp Academy, launched this month through Bain Capital Ventures, matches students with a startup company. Although students often find startups a “risky” place to work, Bain matches students with companies they believe are “growing,” such as SurveyMonkey and Rent the Runway.

Nearly 350 celebrated the renaming of the Medicine School after a $225 million donation made by 1940 Wharton graduate Raymond Perelman and his late wife, Ruth, where Raymond was also presented with a Medal for Distinguished Achievement from Penn.

Each year, in partnership with Hong Kong’s Polytechnic University, 13 students travel with faculty to Hong Kong for two weeks where they treat disabled children throughout the area.


President Barack Obama announced a new “Pay As You Earn” proposal that will help students manage their loans. The program aims to limit monthly loan payments for 1.6 million college students and borrowers, according to a White House statement. VIDEO: Students sound off on loans

School of Design professor and renowned architect James Timberlake, who graduated from PennDesign in 1977, was nominated by President Barack Obama this month for a seat on the National Institute of Building Sciences Board of Directors. Timberlake, if appointed, will join the 21-member board that tackles potential issues facing the construction of safe, affordable housing and facilities in the United States.
