There will be two Baccalaureate ceremonies held on May 14: one at 1:30 p.m. and another at 3 p.m.

Abass Johnson was in the Master of Science in Applied Geosciences program and had last taken classes at Penn in spring 2016.

“We talked about a lot of social issues that lead to health issues,” College senior Selamawit Bekele said. “We realized that having grown up in two different countries, we knew of these types of traditional education systems that prompted these children to leave their homes."

Nursing seniors Marcus Henderson and Ian McCurry are recipients of the 2017 President’s Engagement Prize, which awards $100,000 to put towards their project. 

Announced as one of the winners of the President’s Engagement Prizes last week, the group of students behind Lanzado Lideres — a bilingual, community-based program for high school students in South Philadelphia — will focus on developing the project over the course of the next year. 

"I kind of came to the conclusion that almost everything I was doing had already been done in some form or another," he said. "So it was very redundant on my end. I wasn’t building anything new."

The announcement came among an extended discussion of next year's budget at a University Council meeting late last month.

One professor said “retention battles” could push tuition upward. Penn may have to offer a higher salary to a faculty member they are recruiting from another university, or to a current Penn faculty member who has been offered an appealing job at a rival institution.

After clearing it with the president’s office the afternoon before the show, College senior and Mask and Wig Chairman Tim Bloom invited Gutmann onto the stage to sing Penn’s song, "The Red and Blue."

Over the week, Fossil Free Penn said over 200 total students gathered in College Hall to demonstrate support for their cause. 

“It did not live up to my expectations,” Zhang said. “Reading the description, I thought there would be a lot more activities, a lot more sharing.”

“We realized that the administration is not going to talk to us and that, while we were physically here, there would be absolutely zero progress made,” College sophomore Zach Rissman said.

13 students from Fossil Free Penn were "written up" Wednesday evening by the administration after refusing to leave College Hall when the building was scheduled to close, according to College sophomore Zach Rissman, the sit-in co-coordinator, and College senior Gavi Reiter.  

Gutmann said that this role will expand “Joann’s campus-wide leadership role in making Penn a preeminent leader in diversity and inclusion,” according to the University of Pennsylvania Almanac.

Penn President Amy Gutmann announced today the eight recipients of the 2017 President’s Engagement and Innovation Prize.

Rebecca Stein has experience with online learning through her partnership with Coursera, a site that provides online access to courses offered by top universities around the world.

The award was presented by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to recognize Biden’s advocacy for survivors of sexual assault, survivors of domestic violence and veterans, according to an NBC report.
