The Daily Pennsylvanian

9/11 10th Anniversary Issue

It was the United States that elected a president last week, but the entire world was engaged in the experience. And just like Penn students, young people around the globe tuned in to the ups and downs of the campaign process. For some international students at Penn, witnessing the American election system in action has highlighted political differences in their home countries.

While colleagues aren't yet waving farewell to Provost Ron Daniels, who was elected president of Johns Hopkins University on Tuesday, they acknowledge that his eventual successor has large shoes to fill. In just three years at Penn, Daniels has shown himself to be extremely active in the community and has made several subtle imprints on student life and academic curricula at Penn.

The Latest

As part of the effort to reinvigorate America's economy and achieve energy independence, Obama proposes investing $150 billion over the next 10 years in alternative fuel technology. Obama claims this policy measure will create five million new "green-collar" jobs.

That juicy burger or seductive dessert will come with an unexpected add-on in 2010: a calorie count. Philadelphia City Council passed a bill last week requiring chain restaurants to provide nutritional information on their menu boards. The jet zoomed past the shiny skyscrapers and over the Delaware River, revealing an awesome panorama. As the plane touched down on the tarmac, a palpable sense of elation overtook my weary soul. It was a relief to have the long journey from Beijing behind me.

Though its season hasn't even started yet, the men's swimming team is already plagued by injuries. Senior Steve Martucci underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum last month, and on Tuesday, senior Chaz Maul broke his hand. Freshman diver Jeff Cragg is nursing a broken toe, but with two of his four elder statesmen down, coach Mike Schnur has been forced to rely on more of his younger swimmers.

This past weekend, I was fortunate enough to watch three different Penn teams - football, men's soccer and women's soccer - compete against rival Princeton. And in New Jersey, no less. I was able to accomplish this Quakers trifecta because of one of the more under-appreciated quirks of the Ivy League, something called "jamboree weekends.

M. Soccer Notebook | Historic battle set for Rhodes

Thirty-seven years ago, Disney World had just opened and Richard Nixon's approval ratings were over 50 percent. But 1971 was also the last time that the Penn men's soccer team hosted an all-or-nothing game for the Ivy League title. Fast forward: Coach Rudy Fuller and the Quakers (10-2-4, 4-1-1 Ivy) are trying to win the program's first conference title since 2002 this Saturday at 7:30 p.

Today the Division of Public Safety will hold an open house from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. as a way for Penn students to meet Penn Police and learn more about what the Division of Public Safety does.

The sweet taste of success

Business has been anything but usual for Tom Block lately. Block opened the Naked Chocolate Cafe near 34th and Walnut streets a little more than a week ago - but he hadn't expected that he would be almost overrun with business in such a short time. "We're having a lot of trouble keeping up," Block said.

Football Notebook | Aching Irvin not done yet

Keiffer Garton may have arrived, but Robert Irvin is going nowhere. The senior has been plagued by a sore shoulder and a groin injury he picked up against Brown. But he's taking on a light workload in practice this week in the hopes of playing Saturday against Harvard.
