Five fire trucks surrounded the 40th and Walnut Street McDonald’s near campus on Thursday evening.

Firefighters on the scene noted considerable amounts of smoke rising from the rear kitchen of the restaurant. The Division of Public Safety later confirmed the incident as a grease fire and deemed the situation under control.

All McDonald’s staff exited the building safely. There were no injuries.

Walnut Street at 39th and 40th Street at Chestnut have now reopened to oncoming traffic.

The University is under agreement to purchase this McDonald's location at an unspecified future date. The restaurant will be renovated into a new mixed-use office building, which will include a McDonald's inside of it, as previously reported by The Daily Pennsylvanian.
