News Brief: UA tackles recycling, online calendars

At the Undergraduate Assembly meeting Sunday night, board members discussed an array of initiatives designed to make campus life more convenient for the student body.

They include the following:

n The Facilities Committee presented its findings on current student recycling in an effort to raise awareness about the environment.

Over the past few weeks, the committee gathered data about the current situation and looked into inconveniences that may be deterring students from recycling such as the lack of bins in high-traffic locations.

The committee plans to spread awareness about the ease and advantages of recycling, potentially by providing incentives to fraternities and sororities for properly recycling.

n The UA discussed the creation of a cumulative online calendar in collaboration with Google Calendar.

This initiative proposes that all student groups, from academic to athletic, create Google calendars to which students could subscribe.

The cumulative calendar would include all student-group events and, if feasible, be posted as a PennPortal tab.

The UA will vote on this proposal next week.

n Housing Committee projects for this year will include improvements to the freshman-housing Web site and the housing application process.

n Airport shuttles will run during Thanksgiving break and depart from Upper Quadrangle Gate. Shuttles will start at 5 a.m. to accommodate students with early flights.
