Fuhrman leaving as Education School dean

Will take helm at Columbia's Teachers College

Susan Fuhrman, dean of Penn's Graduate School of Education, will leave the University in July to become president of Columbia University's Teachers College, University officials have announced.

Fuhrman has been dean of GSE since 1995, when she came to Penn from Rutgers. She has her doctorate in Political Science and Education from Columbia and has previously taught at the Teachers College.

In its most recent rankings, U.S. News and World Report placed Columbia's school in a tie for second, while Penn GSE was ranked seventh.

In an e-mail statement yesterday, President Amy Gutmann and Provost Ron Daniels praised Fuhrman's accomplishments as dean. "While this is a great loss for Penn, it is an extraordinary opportunity for Susan who will take the helm of an institution that has contributed a vast amount to the field of education," the e-mail said.

The e-mail announced that an interim dean will be appointed shortly.
