Gymnasts can't top Cornell

Even though Emily Petkun won the all-around competition scoring 37.925, and the Quakers had 10 top-5 finishers, Penn fell, 188.275-186.3. This loss is the second for Penn against the Big Red this season.

Penn put on a good performance on the vault, gaining a score of 46.825. Freshman Jordan Brewer placed second, and Petkun finished third. Cornell's Colleen Davis won the apparatus with a score of 9.625.

The Quakers showed off their skills on the uneven bars with junior Kara Dewhurst garnering a score of 9.575 to place second. Sophomore Stephanie Ortiz was able to place fifth with a score of 9.525.

Petkun displayed her dominance on the balance beam as she won the competition with a score of 9.500. Despite having problems with the beam throughout the season, the Quakers were able to pull it together today scoring a 46.325. Freshman Kerri Lutfey placed second with a score of 9.500 and senior Laura Duros came in third with a 9.400.

Penn could not recover from its mistakes it had on floor, garnering a deduction of a point and a half on falls. The Quakers were only able to garner a 45.850 on floor compared to Cornell's 48.000. Cornell's Elyse Gottschalk won the competition with a 9.700 as Ortiz placed third and Lutfey fifth.

Ortiz went on also place third in the all around competition with a 37.250 as freshman Jordan Brewer placed fourth with a score of 36.700.

Penn will return to competition on Saturday, competing in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Championships in Rhode Island.
