The Big 5 isn't just for basketball anymore.
Yesterday, the head baseball coaches of Penn, Saint Joseph's, La Salle, Villanova and Temple announced the formation of the Philadelphia Diamond Five.
The Diamond Five will function similarly to the Big 5, the well-known intra-city basketball "conference" that involves the same set of teams.
Members of the group will play each other at least once during the season. Furthermore, one goal of the Diamond Five is to expand upon the current Liberty Bell Classic -- a round-robin tournament of area teams culminating at the Phillies' Citizens Bank Park.
Similarly to the Big 5, the Diamond Five will name a player and pitcher of the week, and the coaches will collaborate on community outreach efforts.
