Alum Legend takes home 3 Grammys

R&B; recording artist and Penn graduate John Legend won three awards last night at the 48th annual Grammy award ceremony, including Best New Artist.

His debut album, Get Lifted -- which placed No. 7 in Billboard's Top 200 Album Chart in its first week -- won R&B; Album of the Year against stiff competition from such artists as Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder.

Legend also won Best R&B; Male Vocal Performance for "Ordinary People."

Legend -- who graduated from the College in 1999 -- was nominated for eight awards in total, including Song of the Year and Best Traditional R&B; Performance.

Collaborations with such artists as Kanye West and Common have boosted Legend's visibility, helping Get Lifted cross the platinum mark -- one million records sold -- within two months of release.
