Student attacked near campus

Assault comes less than a week after shooting

A Penn graduate student was attacked early Thursday evening as he was walking near 41st and Delancey streets.

According to Philadelphia Police Lt. John Walker, at about 7:30 p.m., three men approached the student from behind and struck him with a cane, knocking him to the ground.

Two of the men attempted to hold him down, but the student escaped, Walker said.

The student gave the description of his assailants to a police officer, and about 10 minutes later, University Police arrested one man matching the description near 40th and Market streets.

The man is charged with aggravated assault. Philadelphia Police are conducting an investigation.

This attack comes less than a week after Engineering sophomore Mari Oishi was hit in the leg by a stray bullet near 38th and Walnut streets.
