The Daily Pennsylvanian

New 'DP' leaders seek to pique reader interest

From the aftermath of a hurricane to sex in high rise dormitory windows, it's certainly been an interesting year to be a Penn student.

And now, after countless issues, ads, stories and late-night food runs, the editorial board is ready to hand over the keys to the office to a new crop of editors and managers.

The 122nd board of editors and managers of The Daily Pennsylvanian will officially be sworn in at the newspaper's annual banquet tomorrow night at the Inn at Penn.

University president Amy Gutmann, incoming DP executive editor Jeff Greenwald and past executive editor Charles Ornstein -- a 2005 Pulitzer Prize winner -- will address the more than 250 guests.

Greenwald, a College junior and native of Shaker Heights, Ohio, promises to build on the successes of his predecessors.

"The last board pushed the newspaper to heights it had not seen in years," he said. "The new group will have to live up to that, but I think they are more than capable of going above and beyond."

As executive editor, Greenwald will oversee both the business and editorial operations of the DP. He has previously served as the newspaper's sports and design editor.

Greenwald promises to expand and improve the DP's coverage.

"The DP has a lot of tradition and is very respected around campus, but it is not enough to sit on the accomplishments of the past," he said. "We must continue to try and better our coverage of the entire Penn and West Philadelphia communities and pique the interests of our readers."

Overseeing the day-to-day editorial operations of the newspaper will be incoming managing editor Rachel Feintzeig, a College junior from Fairfield, Conn. Feintzeig previously served as the DP's campus news editor.

Shawn Safvi -- a Wharton sophomore from Chapel Hill, N.C. -- will take over as the paper's business manager. Safvi was the finance manager on the 121st board.

College junior Jim Newell will be the editor-in-chief of 34th Street.

Other new editors are Evan Goldin, Nathan Johnson Mara Gordon, Alanna Kaufman, Nicholas Joy, Matt Conrad, Ilario Huober, Josh Wheeling, Jeremy Baron, Anthony Campisi, Becca Starr, Alex Small, Dave Walker, Lea Chu, Wil Hershner, Ryan Townsend, Conan Wang, Matthew Jones, Todd Grabarsky and Jazzy Fournier.

The new members of the business board are Bonnie Williams, Ben Swomley, Maki Puri, Becky Selwyn and Duc Minh Nguyen.
