n Jan. 3 -- At about 8:30 p.m., a witness observed a man breaking into a car in a garage located at 3201 Walnut St. Police apprehended Derek Collins, 49, of the 5800 block of Angora Terrace, who first engaged in a minor scuffle with police officers.
Penn Police officers searched the premises and found that 11 cars had been broken into. They also found a screwdriver, money, CDs and other various items. Including property damage, items had a combined value of "a couple thousand dollars," according to Penn Police Deputy Chief of Investigations Mike Morrin.
Collins was charged with 10 counts each of theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief and one count each of burglary, criminal trespass, resisting arrest and assault on police.
Police officials also linked Collins to another break-in of a car on the 3600 block of Sansom Street. Collins was identified by the complainant after he was held in custody and was charged with another count each of theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief.
n Jan. 3 -- At around 3:40 p.m., a man walked into the RadioShack electronics store located at 212 S. 40th St., took two Playstation2 controllers worth approximately $80 and fled the store. Witnesses described him as a black male in his 40s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a medium build, dark complexion and goatee. He was reportedly wearing a black knit hat and a pea coat. The man was last seen on the 4000 block of Chancellor Street.
n Jan. 3 -- Items totaling about $85 were reportedly stolen from several offices in Steinberg-Dietrich Hall located at 3620 Locust Walk between Dec. 23 at 3:30 p.m. and Jan. 3 at 7:45 a.m. A tan scarf as well as small amounts of money were taken. No forced entry was discovered and police officials are currently checking to see who had access to the building during winter break.
n Jan. 2 -- Three women walked into the Urban Outfitters located at 110 S. 36th St. at about 12:15 p.m., grabbed a pile of clothes worth approximately $840 and fled the store. Witnesses described one of the thieves as tall and in her 20s with braids, a pink jacket and a white tote bag. The second is reportedly 25 years old and 5 feet 6 inches tall with curly hair. The third is also described as 25 years old and 5 feet 6 inches. They were last seen moving north on 36th Street and are also suspected in a similar incident involving another clothing store in Center City Philadelphia.
n Jan. 1 -- Sometime between 6:45 p.m. and 1 a.m., a car parked at 3025 Walnut St. was broken into and a camera worth approximately $400 was stolen. The victim was attending a party at the time and returned to find the driver's side window broken and the camera -- which had been left in plain view on the front seat -- gone. There were no witnesses to the incident.
