Ex-library cafe worker arrested for burglary

Penn Police recovered $1,000 and made an arrest Friday evening, ending a burglary mystery that began earlier in the day when employees of Mark's Cafe in Van Pelt Library discovered cash missing from a safe.

At about 8 a.m. Friday, police received a call from Mark's Cafe employees who had just discovered that a large sum of money had been removed from a safe in the cafe of the library, at 3420 Walnut St.

Detectives compiled lists of people who could have had access to the safe and who might have had a reason to steal the money.

Penn Police Deputy Chief of Investigations Mike Morrin said that one person emerged as a suspect: Nicole Holmes, 24, of the 5900 block of Greenway Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia. She is a former Mark's Cafe employee who was dismissed about a year ago.

Police secured a warrant and searched her home Friday evening. At the house, they said they found the stolen money as well as keys, an access card and a combination number for the safe.
