Theft - Oct. 31 -- A 25-year-old Penn graduate student called police after she saw a man enter the Graduate Student Center, where she was working, at about 5 p.m. and steal a jug containing about $40 that had been collected for hurricane-relief efforts. The witness described the thief as a Latino male in his 20s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and wearing baggy jeans with bleach stains and a gray jacket. He reportedly had a shaved head. Police are working to identify a suspect. - Oct. 31 -- A Penn graduate student reported that he left his Samsung laptop computer -- worth $1,500 -- unattended in an unsecured room in the Chemistry Building at 231 S. 34th St. at about 4 p.m. and returned at 4:30 p.m. to find it stolen. - Oct. 29 -- A 17-year-old female Penn freshman reported that she left her handbag unattended on a sofa at a party at 120 S. 41st St. at midnight and returned at about 3 a.m. to find several items missing. Taken were $60 in cash, three cell phones, an ATM card, a New York driver's license and house keys. - Oct. 27 -- A 20-year-old female Penn undergraduate reported to police that someone entered her residence at 237 S. 41st St. and removed her Apple laptop computer -- worth $1,500 -- sometime between 7 and 8 p.m. Thursday evening. The thief likely entered through the front door, which had been left unlocked and open. - Oct. 27 -- A security guard at the Fresh Grocer -- located at 4001 Walnut St. -- reportedly observed Dwight Mason, 41, of the 2200 block of N. Hobart St. from the Wynnefield section of West Philadelphia, walking down an aisle putting assorted brands of deodorant in his pockets and down his shirt at about 4:30 p.m. When Mason allegedly tried to leave the store without paying for $56 worth of merchandise, the security guard held him until police arrived. He was arrested and charged with retail theft. - Oct. 27 -- A security guard at the Fresh Grocer allegedly saw Victor Lloyd, 40, of the 4800 block of Olive Street in the Mill Creek neighborhood of West Philadelphia, attempting to leave the store without paying for $73 worth of packaged food products, including steak and bacon. The guard held Lloyd until police arrived. He is charged with retail theft. - Oct. 26 -- Employees inside the John Morgan Building -- located at 3620 Hamilton Walk -- reportedly witnessed two maintenance workers enter Room 379 sometime between 3:05 and 3:50 p.m. A short time later, an employee discovered an Apple iPod and laptop computer -- worth $3,250 -- missing from the office. Detectives later searched the locker of one of the maintenance workers and found some of the laptop components inside. They subsequently obtained a search warrant for the home where both suspects live near the intersection of North 59th and Master streets in the Carroll Park section of West Philadelphia. There, police arrested Damen Waynes, 30, and found more laptop components. The next day, they took Anthony Hernandez, 28, into custody when he arrived for work. Police reportedly found the laptop in his possession.
