News Brief: Bellace named new deputy provost

After one and a half years as Penn's associate provost, Janice Bellace will take on the role of deputy provost, University President Amy Gutmann announced yesterday.

Bellace, who received both her bachelor and law degrees from Penn in the early 1970s, will now oversee undergraduate and graduate Ph.D. education and the Office of Student Conduct.

The former legal studies professor and undergraduate dean of Wharton will also deal with faculty issues, including "recruitment, retention, promotion, compensation, affirmative action and issues of gender and minority equity," Gutmann wrote in a statement.

Prior to Bellace, the role of deputy provost had been filled by Peter Conn. Conn was appointed interim provost last year while the administration searched for a permanent replacement.
