Senior guard Jeff Schiffner was selected by the Brooklyn Kings late last night in the third round of the United States Basketball League draft. Schiffner was the 25th overall selection and the only draftee from the Ivy League.
Two other Big 5 players -- St. Joseph's Jameer Nelson and Temple's David Hawkins -- were also selected in the draft. Nelson was the 10th overall pick by the Pennsylvania ValleyDawgs and Hawkins was the 43rd overall selection by the Florence Flyers.
The top pick in the draft was R.T. Guinn, a forward from Baylor selected by the Cedar Rapids River Raiders.
In addition to Schiffner, the Kings also selected Manhattan standout guard Luis Flores, Wagner forward Nigel Wyatte and Quinnipiac forward Rashaun Banjo.
The Kings start their season next Monday at home against the Brevard Blue Ducks.
Last season, Brooklyn selected Penn grad Ugonna Onyekwe with the 61st pick overall. Onyekwe opted to play basketball for the Spanish squad Le¢n Caja Espa¤a instead.
