SAC, SPEC elect new board members

The Student Activities Council and the Social Planning and Events Committee recently voted in new boards for the next academic year.

SAC's executive committee elected Wharton junior Simon Bland to the position of chairman for the third time, while College junior Naomi Berkowitz was named vice chairwoman and Engineering junior Kamala Nicholson was reappointed as secretary for a second term.

SAC serves as a liaison between the University and the 185 student groups on Penn's campus that it funds.

But despite the fact that news of his re-election is still fresh, Bland is already working on events and administrative details for the future.

"We just finished the budget allocation for the next year."

He added that SAC is planning a leadership conference and workshop.

The new chairman also said that the organization's goal for this term will be to align itself with the feedback it received in December from Penn's clubs.

"We will continue to be diplomatic, efficient and approachable," Bland said.

Elections for the SPEC board were held Monday night, and saw College junior Maahir Haque -- the former co-director of SPEC's Film Society Committee -- rise to the position of president, while Wharton junior Keri Vislocky -- who was the co-director of the Spring Fling Committee -- was chosen as vice president.

Former Co-Director of SPEC's Film Society Committee and College junior Amy Liao was nominated treasurer, while Nursing junior Geebin Mak was chosen to be the organization's secretary.

The branches of SPEC organize campus events such as Spring Fling and the spring and fall Connaissance speakers.

While SPEC has not yet defined its goals for next year, it plans to dedicate all of its energy to reaching out to the Penn community.

According to Mak, "We want to encourage more students to come out and participate in more activities."
