Assailants rob four in separate incidents

In nine incidents this fall, 13 Penn students have been robbed at gunpoint. Two University students were robbed near campus Thursday morning by a man pretending to have a gun, and a third student was robbed at gunpoint Saturday morning while walking with a Drexel University student who was injured in the incident. University Police have not made any arrests in the incidents, which remain under investigation. The male Drexel student was walking with a female Penn student on the 100 block of S. 40th Street when the two were approached by a man displaying a gun shortly after 4 a.m. The assailant, described as wearing a red hat and green bandanna, struck the male student behind his ear with a blunt object, causing a laceration that was later treated at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The robber took $50 in cash from the Penn student and $5 in cash from the Drexel student before getting into the passenger seat of a waiting car and fleeing the scene. University Police do not yet have a description of the getaway vehicle or its driver. The second incident occurred at 1:42 a.m. Thursday when a man approached two female students near the intersection of 41st and Sansom streets and told them he had a gun. The suspect grabbed one of the students and demanded money from the two women. After the second student gave the man $20 in cash, he released the woman and fled north on 41st Street by foot. The victims described the man as 5'10", 170 pounds, clean-shaven and in his 30s, according to University Police. So far this semester, a total of 13 Penn students have been robbed at gunpoint in nine incidents. None of the most recent robberies handled by University Police occurred on campus, and before this weekend, several of the incidents had taken place outside of University Police jurisdiction. University Police patrol an area extending from Market Street to Baltimore Avenue, and from the river to 43rd Street. Also this weekend, a man was arrested for a weapons offense at the corner of 39th and Sansom streets. Philadelphia resident Harold Carter was in a car with three other men Friday at 11:06 p.m. when Penn Police received a report that one of the men had a gun. He was arrested after police arrived on the scene and found a handgun in the car.
