CAMPUS BRIEFS: Friday, September 19, 1997

Armed men rob student Wednesday night No arrests have been made, and the robbery remains under investigation, according to University Police. As the student passed in front of 3817 Sansom Street, three men stepped out of a blue and silver Chevrolet Malibu parked along the side of the road. After pointing a gun at the student and taking his belongings -- which included his wallet, $150 in cash, a PennCard and a green backpack -- the assailants got into the car and fled west on Sansom Street. Wednesday night's robbery marks the sixth robbery at gunpoint of University students so far this year. At least eight victims have been involved in the six incidents, and University Police have yet to make an arrest in any of the crimes. -- Ian Rosenblum Pretrial conference in Sled case postponed Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Carolyn Engel Temin postponed a pretrial conference yesterday for the three suspects charged with murdering University researcher Vladimir Sled after the assistant district attorney and a defense lawyer failed to show up. However, prosecutor Dick Carroll stressed that the postponement won't delay the trial, which should begin in January. Sled, 38, was walking home with his fiancee, Cecelia Hagerhall, when he was stabbed to death on the 4300 block of Larchwood Avenue last Halloween night. Eugene "Sultan" Harrison, 33, Yvette Stewart, 29, and Bridget Black, 26, are charged in the biochemist's murder. -- Scott Lanman
