To the Editor: If the Pit were a university-wide or Recreation Department operation, I would agree that certainly the facility should offer more than its current two stairmasters, stationary bike, universal-style gym, rowing machine, climbing wall and floor mats. However, given that the Pit is entirely student-run and funded completely by revenues of Hill's commissary operation, we are very proud of what it offers. Hill students have free access to this operation from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. (I even know of people who come to use our facility from the high rises!) Further, because it is student-driven, the operation is run according to student tastes, and provides jobs within Hill as well. I agree with the caption of the photograph: we need new and better equipment to serve our community, but considering that the Pit was set up by students for students, and is funded primarily by student support of our commissary, I'd say we have a lot to be proud of. Hill students have got it much better than most -- our facility is the only such place in the whole of University City. If the DP is going to cite the Hill Pit as an example of anything, it perhaps should be an example as part of the solution, not part of the problem. Vishal Shah Hill House Manager College '00
