Penn is still ignorantly confused with Penn State and it continues to retain the reputation as a second-tier Ivy League institution. The University must find a way to solidify a national identity so that Penn will be recognized as one of the very top universities. A 1996 Presidential election on campus is the perfect remedy. A debate at the University would focus unwavering attention on our campus and force the nation to recognize the campus itself, not only our basketball and football teams. It would bring unending pride and excitement to campus and symbolically mark the school's resurrection. To make this happen the entire University community must do everything it can to bring President Clinton and his challenger to West Philadelphia. We strongly urge President Judith Rodin to use her White House ties and allies in Washington to persuade the debate committee to select Philadelphia for the venue. Furthermore, we ask all students to write letters to Janet Brown at the Commission On Presidential Debates expressing our desire to host such a debate. The address is: 601 13th St. NW; Washington, D.C. 20005.
