IN BRIEF: Professor emeritus passed away earlier this week

As a professor of philosophy, she taught several famous then-students including, Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., and novelists Chaim Potok and John Edgar Weideman. Flower has been a faculty member since 1937 and was finally given tenure in 1956. She was much remembered for devoting her time towards advancing minorities and women in the academic setting. One of Flower's best known published works is the two-volume A History of Philosophy in America which she co-wrote with American civilization professor Murray Murphey, who also teaches at the University. And she was rewarded several honors celebrating her achievements. In 1987 Flower was voted "The Honorary Woman of the Year" by the Society for Women in Philosophy, and just earlier this year, the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy honored her with the Herbert W. Schneider Award. -- Betty Yuan
