By pushing off the referendum, the group may be hoping to avoid a reform proposal that calls for the elimination of the NEC. The group's members, by procrastinating, reveal an insecurity over the quality of work they produce. If the NEC members have performed well, then their efforts should speak for themselves and students will not vote for a proposal that terminates the NEC. But by avoiding the issue, NEC members send a message that they are not proud of their accomplishments or willing to defend the benefits of their organization. The NEC has a responsibility to students, not just to the organization itself. We urge the NEC to hold the student government constitutional reform referendum on the same day as the Undergraduate Assembly elections to ensure the largest turnout possible. This is an issue that not only affects the future of student government and the NEC, but the future of student advocacy on campus. If the NEC objects to the reform proposals then we urge its members to speak out against them and defend their organization -- this is their right. But they must also perform the duties that their positions call for and set a date for this referendum.
