LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Maniac Cops In Philly

To the Editor: A frustrated, vertically-challenged, single-digit-IQ superhero pulled me over a few days ago for "careless AND reckless driving in HIS city" and felt obligated to hold his gun while barking orders and forcefully pulling the key off the ignition of my vehicle. His fervor had been sparked by the sound of my motorcycle which had alerted him that a dangerous individual not yet in his sight was traveling at a meteoroid-like speed on the other side of the block (I challenge anyone to find a quieter motorcycle). This obviously disturbed officer felt that I represented a threat to his life and that I certainly would run him over if given the opportunity. I should mention that I had already pulled over the sidewalk before he even flashed his lights, having guessed from the tender look in his eyes that he would want to have a little chat. His anger increased tenfold when I politely inquired about the necessity of holding his gun despite my compliant and non-threatening behavior. A five-minute series of threats and arguments ensued and all my (skimpy) Psychology 101 skills went into making him feel good about himself and convincing him to release me. It is really sad that such individuals negate the hard work of many of their colleagues and have gradually led me to feel unsafe around any police officers. Thinking that the Clinton administration is attempting to unleash 100,000 of them send chills through my entire body. To those who will undoubtedly claim that these are biased, unwarranted comments, I will only reply this: you ain't black, are you? PAPA THIAM Wharton '95
