BRIEF: 'Penn Rocks' director wins prize

The $500 award was presented to Werth for his work on the Penn Rocks for the Homeless project, an entirely student-run show which he directed this year. The Penn Rocks show raised more than $10,000 this year for the homeless. "I think it's great to have an outside group recognize Penn Rocks," Werth said this week. He added that the show will "keep growing" in the future, and become "more and more professional." The fifth annual show, which was performed in April, attracted more than 2,500 students and featured an eclectic mix of University students, regional bands and professional recording artists. The money was raised through donations and ticket prices, and was donated to two local charitable organizations which benefit the homeless -- the University City Hospitality Coalition, and Empty the Shelters. Werth said he would donate the $500 prize to the Penn Rocks fund. -- Daniel Gingiss
