Beanie

s Coffee House to close down today Without any warning to its customers, Beanie's Coffee House will close its doors tonight -- for good. The popular late-night hangout on Sansom Street has not posted any signs because the whole ordeal came as a surprise to everyone. "The owner decided to sell the place, he sold the place [and] we all found out last weekend," said one employee, who asked that her name not be used. "I have no idea why." The employee said she thinks a coffee company bought the property, and that it would "close for a month or two and remodel" into another coffee shop. But, she added, all of the Beanie's employees are now out of work. "Now we're all unemployed, and not too happy about it," she said. "We're all as much surprised as everybody else." Frequent customers -- who were all surprised at the news of the closing -- said they will miss the coffee, food and atmosphere. "It kind of makes me sad because it was a fun place," said College freshman Polly Weiss. "They have good coffee and it's pretty mellow most of the time?it's nice to just talk and sit there and chill out." College freshman Kim Fleisher said she just applied for a job at Beanie's over the summer, and is upset that it is closing. "I don't want it to close," she said last night. "It's a really great place [and] I'm going to miss it a lot." Fleisher added that Beanie's was special because it was one of the few late-night campus spots. "I definitely think the campus needs something that's open all night," she said. "I always joke around that by the time I'm a senior, I want to open my own all-night diner." Perhaps the Beanie's employee put it best. "It's a drag?[but] that's life," she said. Beanie's will remain open until 2 a.m. tonight. Owner Matt Bowen could not be reached for comment last night.
