Grad students turn out for happy hour

The Gold Standard hosted the first graduate student happy hour of the year, drawing over 100 students to the restaurant and bar on 36th Street. The Graduate and Professional Student Assembly sponsors the happy hours, which will be held monthly until the end of the year, according to GAPSA Chairperson Patricia Khuly. GAPSA has been having discussions with the University about bringing a graduate student pub or cafZ to campus. "We're trying to come up with something relatively solid by the end of the year. It's really a long term goal," she said. According to Khuly, a third-year Veterinary School student, the lack of graduate student space has been a concern among students for many years. Ruth Steele, a Chemistry graduate student, said the happy hour allowed students to see new faces outside the usual academic settings. "The individual departments get really insular, and you tend to see the same people over and over again," Steele said. "We really loved it." Chemistry graduate student Danielle Brabazon agreed with Steele. "We met a lot of new people," she said. "This is something that should definitely continue." – Stephen Sanford
