LETTER: Simple Solution

The author of the letter to the DP professes an inability to comprehend why one should "have to look at two homosexuals sucking face on the front of my college newspaper." I recommend a simple solution: avert your eyes. The author's arguments are idiocy. The author accuses homosexuals of making a big deal out of a simple kiss; yet, the author seems to be the one who is making a big deal. The author accuses homosexuals of hypocrisy; yet, the author seems to be the hypocrite. The author has some preconceived idea of morality and states that holding hands in public or an occasional peck on the cheek would meet his definition, but that the DP photograph does not. I have to wonder whether two men holding hands or giving each other a peck on the cheek would survive this definition of morality; I suspect not. The author's attempt to analogize the DP photograph to Elle MacPherson is completely illogical: the former seeks to promote gay awareness; the latter seeks to denounce sexism. Think about it. In addition, I am certain the author has no idea "what a pregnant woman feels like when she experiences 'morning sickness.' " Finally, the author speaks of the photograph as being "revolting." What I find "revolting" is his choice of language. I would hope that after four years at the University of Pennsylvania, the author would have acquired a sufficient vocabulary as to make an argument without the need to rely so heavily on profanity. The Constitution of the United States, which grants the letter writer the right to espouse homophobic and illogical views, also permits individuals of all orientations to hold hands and kiss in public and permits the DP to print a photograph of those acts. Unfortunately, ours is not a society which tolerates such acts by the non-heterosexual population. The author's letter is a testament to this sad fact. JONATHAN BOOK Law '92
