LETTER: Ignorant Hatred

Rarely have I encountered at this University someone who spews garbage with such conviction. The ideas in the letter to the editor (DP 3/30/92) are revolting. The author seems to think that he is speaking for the Penn community and I can only hope he is monumentally mistaken. The letter was full of the most shameful intolerance and ignorant hatred for the rights of others to pursue their individual sexual preferences. The public display of affection which confronted the University on the DP cover was objectionable only in that it treats homosexuals as freakish, as if it is newsworthy that these men are -- ohmygod -- kissing. I doubt that the Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian Awareness Days agenda deems most essential the right to kiss publicly. The goals no doubt are closer to the desire to provide a climate at Penn where people are free to choose what they wish to do with their bodies and with whom they wish to do it. The author said he would prefer to have seen a picture of a huge crowd of people showing support. It would be nice -- but the conservative Penn community provided a weak turnout at last month's rally. When reading the letter, I was paralyzed by anger and reacted with nervous laughter -- covering up fear that our world is so genuinely screwed up and the products of our generation aren't making things any better.
