Opponents of the proposed Campus Inn extended-stay hotel project at 40th and Pine streets will have to wait a little longer to make their case. Their appeal of a Historical Commission decision allowing the project to move forward was scheduled to be heard yesterday before the Department of Licenses & Inspections Review Board.





A syrupy fountain of fizzy flavors

My tongue walked into a creamy winter wonderland with a 1908 soda shop feel. Franklin Fountain, a small "ice cream saloon" on the corner of Letitia and Market streets in Old City, flings you into a timeless vortex of sundaes, phosphates and ice cream sodas The shop was opened a few years ago by Ryan and Eric Berley, two brothers who traveled across the country every year and compiled their ideas, along with those of the rest of their staff, to create the old-fashioned candies and goods supplied at the store.

It's usually around 2 a.m. when the editors at The Daily Pennsylvanian pick up the phone to call the printers. For the three or four editors still at the office, the 15 minutes waiting for the confirmation call are spent uploading Internet content and cleaning the office. When the call finally comes, the office clears out and the DP turns off its lights. For the printers, however, the night has only just begun.
