M. Hoops | Rivalry renewed

These days, it only comes around once in a blue moon -- like fresh bagels at Hill House brunch or a Philadelphia championship. The stars have aligned, however, to give meaning to a rivalry that hasn't seen real action since a heart-pounding Penn comeback over the Tigers in 2005, when Quakers faithful rushed the court after their team rallied from an 18-point second-half deficit at the Palestra.

U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) has had a busy couple of weeks in Washington and is making a stop at Penn to talk about it. Specter - who is one of the most senior members of the Senate, having served five consecutive terms since his election in 1980 - will address students and faculty at 3:30 p.

Random selection is no friend of mine. I've been signing up for preceptorials since I was a freshman, and I have yet to be among the chosen few in the small, non-credit courses that get lauded as a major selling point for the University. My first disappointment came after I registered for a Harry Potter discussion in 2005, and I don't expect to land a spot in wine or cheese tasting this semester.

The Latest

It was busy last week on Capitol Hill and in Philadelphia. In one room on the Hill, the House Financial Services committee grilled eight banking chiefs on how they used their portions of the $700 billion bailout. Down the hall, a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee vainly tried to get some answers from Stewart Parnell, the president of Peanut Corporation of America, the company responsible for shipping tainted peanut-based products across the country.

Penn received slightly more regular-decision applications for the class of 2013 than in past years, while the total number of applicants remained about steady, the Admissions office announced this week. The University received 19,179 regular-decision applications, up slightly from last year's 19,023.

The Undergraduate Assembly saw its largest turnout yet this semester at Sunday's debate on the recent decision to update the current Information Systems and Computing calendar rather than endorse DormNoise as the official University-wide calendar system. While DormNoise - created by Wharton sophomore and UA member Jay Rodrigues - functions as a social networking Web site with a built-in calendar, ISC would rework the Penn calendar system on Penn Portal.

In a positive step toward becoming more labor-friendly, the Penn Bookstore recently announced its intent to market and sell an apparel line made with labor standards exceeding the ones currently set by Penn, at the recommendation of the Worker Rights Consortium.

"Baby be Wise" video encourages students to "Immunize"

For those who may not want to get a flu shot, a video starring employees at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania - "Baby be Wise, Immunize" - may make them reconsider. College junior Ryan Leonard and Mel Kearney , an occupational medicine nurse at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, produced the video last fall to raise awareness about flu vaccines.

In one of the best Penn-Princeton games in years, the Quakers held on to beat their arch rivals, 62-55, in overtime. Penn jumped out to a 9-2 lead behind a hard-nosed layup by Harrison Gaines and 5 quick points on jumpers by Tyler Bernardini. Princeton recovered quickly with a three-pointer by Dan Mavraides and a lay-up by center Pawel Buczak that sparked a 8-0 run.

Nicole Korczykowski, '01 Wharton and College alumna, is listed among those killed in the Continental Flight 3407 crash near Buffalo, N.Y., this past Thursday. The commuter airplane was carrying 49 people en route from Newark, N.J., to Buffalo. The plane crashed into a home in Clarence Center, N.

W. Hoops | Biemer beats Bears all by herself

Without much firepower on offense, there's a surefire way to tell whether the Penn women's basketball team will win or lose. When the Quakers allow their opponents to score at least 50 points in a game, they have a woeful 2-14 record. Going into this weekend's home games against Brown and Yale, the team had held opponents to less than 50 points in a game only three times.

Today at noon, the Penn Women's Center is hosting its Sex Toy Social, a popular Women's Week event. You'll probably find some vibrators and flavored lubricant - but you probably won't find anything much more spiritual than a Kama Sutra, even though the Office of the Chaplain is just across the hall.

A fraternity and sorority event was interrupted last weekend, when students at a meeting of Greek chapter presidents in the Philadelphia suburbs received citations for charges relating to underage drinking and other alcohol-related offenses. The meeting was held at the Fellowship Farm camp in New Hanover, a small township in Montgomery County about an hour outside of the city.

This year, The Daily Pennsylvanian wants to reconnect with its readers. In January, we told that we want to cover more of the issues you care about and answer the questions you want answered. But we're asking you to meet us partway - and we need your feedback to help us know exactly what issues and questions matter to you.

M. Hoops | Penn avenges 32-point loss with win at Brown

Maybe just for a week, Penn men's basketball coach Glen Miller wished he had never left Providence, R.I., for the big, bad streets of West Philadelphia. "Penn's not an easy place to coach if you're losing," Miller said. "I think that's an understatement." Miller, who left Brown to take the job at Penn before the 2006-07 season, led his team into the Bears' Pizzitola Center Friday night with more than one monkey on his back.

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Feb. 14 - The magic surrounding Penn basketball hasn't been what it once was. But as a youthful team that has dealt with more than its fair share of struggles and setbacks, the Quakers will settle for a slightly humbler existence - one as world-class escape artists.
