While Philadelphia has a reputation for its toughness and the presence of the homeless, the homeless count has decreased by 500 people since 2006, according to a report published each year by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

After public uproar over its decision to stop funding Planned Parenthood, Susan G. Komen for the Cure decided to continue funding existing grants last Friday. The organization made no promise to fund them with future grants.

“Penn consistently, and more recently, has been seen as an environment that is supportive and welcoming across the board of LGBT students and allies,” Furda said. While the Common Application does not include a check box for applicants to indicate their sexual orientation, many students may choose to self-identify as LGBT through their essays and other written material.

For the Class of 2016, the Admissions Office sent out 886 deferral notifications to hopeful applicants, informing them that they would have to wait until the end of March to hear from Penn.
