At its weekly meeting Sunday, the UA passed the Wharton American Sign Language Resolution and the Bylaws Amendment concerning the University Committee Appointment.

The Commission on Presidential Debates is responsible for promoting and organizing the format, schedule, timing, location, topics and other aspects of the UA presidential debates.

The Undergraduate Assembly has elected College junior Mark Pan to the new UA Communication Director position to help improve communications with students.

Sunday night, the Undergraduate Assembly’s first meeting of the semester had a full agenda, which included the Division of Public Safety’s response to Friday’s shooting at the Bridge Cinema de Lux, life after study abroad and the Social Planning and Events Committee’s budget.

The Freshman Class Board, in collaboration with many Philadelphia restaurants and businesses, will be hosting the series of events Jan. 18-23.

Supporters argue that the changes will offer the student body a more direct voice in the elections and hope that such power will incite more interest in student government on campus.

As a result of Wharton junior Rohan Grover’s recent resignation from his position as Vice President of External Affairs, the Junior Class Board is currently accepting applications for VPEA.

The Class of 2013 Board will bring a brand new event for freshmen called NSOver Again from Jan. 22 to 24, according to 2013 Class President and Wharton freshman Jonathon Youshaei.

Approximately 23% of the student body voted on measures to reform student government. Students will now vote directly for a UA president and vice president during elections.

Votes on proposed changes to student government elections reached the necessary threshold for consideration. Turnout surpassed 20 percent on two questions, respectively, by 6 p.m. Thursday.

Eighteen percent of students had voted on the current UA referendum as of midnight last night — bringing it only two percentage points away from the 20 needed in order to enter consideration.

The UA considered two discussion papers. The first was about the possibility of including HBO or Showtime on Penn Video Network. Next, The New York Times sponsorship program was discussed.

Voting for the referendum calling for a change in the Undergraduate Assembly’s elections process officially begins at midnight tonight.

At the State of the School, leaders of the six student government branches spoke about past accomplishments, their plans for the spring and their creative talents.

The signs on Locust Walk — which included phrases like “Fling is Cancelled,” “No More Hey Day” and “Fall Break Discontinued” — were part of a one-day campaign by the NEC to teach students the purpose of Penn Student Government.

At the Undergraduate Assembly’s shortest meeting of the semester — less than an hour — the group passed a resolution to support Native American students.

Students attempted UA reform in 1991, 1995 and 1996 — and proposed remarkably similar changes to today's referendum.
