Keeping up with the Joneses

If you were one of the 3.3 million people who watched the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament online, you may have seen a familiar face at halftime. Columbia men's basketball coach Joe Jones (along with New York TV personality Jason Horowitz and St. John's coach Norm Roberts) was featured on all the halftime programming of NCAA March Madness On Demand at CBSSports.

Since the Penn baseball team returned from its spring-break trip, a few people have risen to the occasion and given the Quakers a leg up on the competition - the Meiklejohn Stadium grounds crew. Today's Liberty Bell Classic opener against Lafayette was supposed to be on the Leopards' home field in Easton, Pa.

After finally hanging on to upset a ranked team, the men's lacrosse team finds itself somewhere it hasn't been in over a year: the top 20. Thanks to their 12-10 win over then-No. 19 Harvard Saturday, the Quakers (4-2, 2-0 Ivy) have moved into the final spot in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll released yesterday.

The 2008 Penn softball team might be enjoying the best start in program history, but the real test of greatness is yet to come. Two losses and expectations of a tight Ivy League season will follow the Quakers to Bethlehem, Pa. for their scheduled doubleheader against Lehigh this afternoon.

Almost time to ditch the training wheels

M. Lax attacks: Penn drops 12 on Crimson

Before the women's tennis team took on Marshall and William & Mary this weekend, senior co-captain Julia Koulbitskaya predicted that her team would have to be "well-prepared at the bottom of the lineup." Her words proved prophetic. On Saturday, the Quakers lost the top two singles slots, but victories further down the depth chart propelled them an upset over No.

Wrestling: NCAA Championships | Down for the count

ST. LOUIS - Coming into this year's NCAA championships, the Penn wrestling program had a streak of at least one All-American in 11 straight years. That streak is now over. In a tournament that coach Zeke Jones called "tough," the Quakers had subpar results at this year's three-day Championship at the Scottrade Center in downtown St.

With an individual record of 8-16, an overall finish of 34th and zero All-Americans at this year's NCAA Championships, it might seem that the Penn Wrestling team is in a bit of a rut. And looking at the numbers, it's true that this year's tournament was disappointing, especially after two straight years with a national champion.

Every day in training on the Schuylkill River, the women's rowing team passes its Saint Joseph's counterpart, quietly sizing it up. "We're trying to start a rivalry," Penn coach Mike Lane said. "They're great competitors." Last Friday, the Quakers hit the two-kilometer course on the Schuylkill and showed Saint Joseph's what they were made of.

Despite less-than-ideal weather conditions that slowed play and limited the tournament to only 45 holes, the men's golf team persevered and finished third at the George Washington Invitational. The women had better weather but worse results, placing 17th out of 20 teams at the First Market Bank Intercollegeiate tournament.

With two home runs this weekend and three overall, first baseman Kyle Armeny is still Penn's longball specialist. But third baseman William Gordon now has two of his own, having found a creative way to keep pace with his teammate. Gordon had an inside-the-park home run in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, helping spark Penn to a 7-6 victory, its third in three games against Mount Saint Mary's.

ST. LOUIS - Coming into the NCAA Championships, Penn wrestling coach Zeke Jones knew that for his team to earn high All-American honors, each wrestler would have to start fast out of the gate. But with one day down at the tournament, Penn has had trouble doing so.

Let's play two? But Softball doesn't like it

In high school, all it takes is seven innings. The eight freshmen on the Penn softball team are learning that to be successful in college, it takes 14. At 1 p.m. tomorrow, the Quakers will take the field for the first of two contests. Like all game days this season, Penn will have to play a doubleheader.

Just when it was beginning to settle in, the women's lacrosse team is on the road again. The Quakers travel to Ithaca, N.Y. tomorrow to play Cornell for their second Ivy road game of the season. No. 6 Penn has already played five of its six games away from home.

Coming off a close loss over spring break, the Penn men's golf team is looking for a second chance to prove itself worthy of another Ivy League title. Tomorrow the Quakers play their second match of the spring season. Five players will travel to Bethany Beach, Del.

In the 129-year history of Harvard men's lacrosse, the Crimson hold a record of 524-524-11. This Saturday, Penn will try to make the squad from Cambridge an all-time losing program. More recent history is not on the Quakers' side: Harvard has beaten Penn three seasons in a row, including a 7-6 overtime victory last year in Boston.

Outdoor tennis is a whole different animal than its indoor counterpart. As women's tennis head coach Mike Dowd put it, "You have the elements of wind, sun, and the points are longer. It's a little bit more like a chess match outdoors." After a week-long trip in California in which they lost four of five outdoor matches, Dowd's team is going to get another mouthful of the elements against Marshall (12-4) and No.

Rain keeps Baseball at home

When it rains, it pours. Penn baseball coach John Cole is getting used to that. His team has already had two rainouts, and inclement weather is again throwing the schedule a curve. A pair of doubleheaders against Mount St. Mary's (0-12) was originally slated for today and tomorrow at Emmitsburg, Md.

The women's golf team is traveling to Williamsburg, Va. this weekend in hopes of better golfing weather, but history shows that a difficult trip could be in the forecast for this young Quakers squad. For the fifth-straight year, the Quakers will compete in the First Market Bank Intercollegiate tournament, hosted by William & Mary.
