Quakers get aced in last weekend

With a whimper, the Penn men's tennis season was brought to a close as the Quakers dropped their final two matches this past weekend. The Quakers were upset by Cornell 4-3 in Ithaca, N.Y., on Friday and came home to Levy Tennis Pavilion only to be felled again by Columbia 5-2 yesterday.

M. Tennis ready to 'run the table' after Harvard

By the time Ludacris takes the Franklin Field stage tonight, the Penn men's tennis team hopes to have taken the Number One Spot in the Ivy League. The Quakers can do so today by going into Boston and defeating Harvard, which is perched atop the Ivy League (10-6, 2-0 Ivy).

Against Yale on Friday, the Penn women's tennis team found itself tied 2-2, winning two of the first three singles matches after dropping the all-important doubles point. The Quakers needed to take two of the remaining three matches in order to leave New Haven, Conn.

Tale of 2 teams for W. Tennis

In its second weekend of Ivy play, the Penn women's tennis team faces opponents at two ends of the spectrum Yale (5-8, 1-0 Ivy) has butted heads with a number of national powerhouses; Brown (9-5, 0-1 Ivy) is a middling team with a schedule softer than a Tempur-pedic.

For the Penn gymnastics team, the journey may be over for all but one. Junior Jordan Brewer will find out tomorrow whether her score is good enough to join teammate Marissa Rosen - who has already qualified - at NCAA Regionals. But for the rest of the Quakers, the season ended Saturday in Williamsburg with a sixth-place finish in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship.

For the Penn men's tennis team, relief is coming at the right time. After spending the better part of its season with a rash of injuries, the team looks to return to full strength tomorrow when it faces No. 64 Princeton (8-5) at Lott Courts in both teams' Ivy opener.

If Marissa Rosen keeps this up for two more years, she will earn her place in Quakers history as one of Penn best gymnasts. As a freshman, Rosen won an Ivy Classic individual title on the beam, a performance she followed this year by claiming an individual title on the vault.

The Penn men's tennis team battled Saturday against No. 8 Michigan, but when the final point had been decided, they were left with an all-too-familiar feeling. The Wolverines dispatched the Quakers 7-0 at Lott Courts for the team's fourth loss over spring break, and sixth straight overall.

It's not often that the Penn men's tennis team faces a former Israeli champion, the No. 40 singles player and the No. 23 doubles team in the nation, all in one weekend. But in matches Friday and Saturday against Maryland and No. 43 Louisville, the Quakers saw their toughest competition all year.

In all-Pa. meet, Penn gets first wins of year

As the Ursinus gymnasts exhibited quality performance after quality performance during Saturday's quad meet, the Penn cheers could not be heard over those of the Bears and their supporters. While the Quakers hosted the meet in Hutchinson Gymnasium, the home team advantage seemed negated by an audience divided equally among Penn, Ursinus, West Chester and Wilson fans.
