9/11 10th Anniversary Issue

I’m not a lawyer, a doctor or a trauma expert, but in researching my last two columns, I think I’ve encountered most of the issues and concerns which arise around sexual assault on campus. Accordingly I’d like to propose, based on what I’ve learned, what a sane, fair and compassionate sexual assault response policy might look like.

Penn men's lacrosse snapped a two-game skid in the slushy Lehigh Valley weather on Tuesday night. The Quakers pulled out a 9-6 win over Lafayette with some unexpected help from senior midfielder Chris Moriarty, who led the way with a hat trick. Penn (3-2) got a solid effort in goal from junior Jimmy Sestilio, who made 10 saves and strengthened his case to win what appears to be an up-for-grabs position in net. Jason Sands scored the first goal of the game for the Leopards, but the Quakers struck twice in quick succession with goals from Moriarty and senior Chris Hupfeldt.

In order to address a $55 million deficit in the budget of the provost, Cornell will cut all of its schools' budgets by 2 to 2.3 percent of their yearly spending.  The deficit was caused by the office of the provost "giving out allocations to both the colleges and the central administrative units that exceeded the revenues that were coming in," Interim Provost Harry Katz said.

The hospitalization of 12 people at Wesleyan University caused by overdoses of the drug Molly has called into question the school's enforcement policies regarding the use of drugs.  In 2011, Wesleyan referred 154 students for disciplinary action on drug-based violations.

Before becoming Penn's Athletic Compliance officer, Elton Cochran-Fikes set numerous records for Penn track from 1970-74.

As a bookish, unathletic high school freshman, Elton Cochran-Fikes shuddered at the idea of anything having to do with sports. Little did he know that, less than a decade later, he would become the first Ivy League athlete to run a mile in less than four minutes.

The Vision

This year’s Black Solidarity Conference upheld a specific mantra: “The Ties that Bind: Unique in Our Blackness, One in Our Struggle.” For three days and three nights, students from colleges across the country joined together to uplift each other.
