The cohort, announced on Nov. 9, will spend a year engaging with scholars and experts to learn about global affairs and policy development. The program draws from each of the graduate schools at Penn, gathering students across a wide range of areas of study.
The Graduate Associates Program is intended for students from any school or department committed to exploring global affairs. Graduate associates learn skills for a career in policy and will be connected to a wider network of those interested in global affairs.
Students in the program attend monthly seminars focused on building the skills necessary for engaging with the policy community. This year, Director of the Lauder Institute’s Global Program Regina Abrami and Clay Risen, New York Times reporter and PWH visiting fellow, will lead the seminars.
The 2023-24 cohort of graduate associates represents a diverse array of academic backgrounds, including biochemistry, nursing, philosophy, social policy, and computer science. Some of the schools represented in the cohort members are the Weitzman School of Design, University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, the Wharton School, and the Perelman School of Medicine.
“We look forward to seeing their contributions to some of the most critical global policy concerns as well as how these individuals will impact their fields as future policy leaders,” PWH Interim Director Michael Weisberg said in the news release.
At some point during their year with the program, graduate associates must publish a policy brief with the assistance of PWH. The program also offers support for larger writing projects, prioritized access to events and programs hosted by PWH, and mentorship from PWH visiting fellows and guests.
In October, PWH announced its cohort of visiting fellows for the 2023-24 academic year. The program, which started in 2016, invites 24 visitors who are experts in fields spanning climate, finance, journalism, and architecture.
