Penn Law School was ranked ninth best law school for scholarly impact, according to the Leiter Law School rankings.

University of Chicago Law School Professor Brian Leiter bases his rankings on a study of scholarly impact ratings published by University of St. Thomas Law School Professor Gregory Sisk and his colleagues. Leiter's ranking is "calculated from the mean and the median of total law journal citations over the past five years to the work of tenured faculty members," according to the study.

Penn Law jumped from the 11th to the 9th spot since Leiter's last ranking in 2015.

The study, which was published on Aug. 14, examined the scholarly impact of law faculties from 2013 to 2017. Sisk's study calculates an overall "weighted score" that determines each law school's ranking.

The study found that Penn Law professors William Bratton, Stephen Burbank, and Cary Coglianese were the University's top three "most cited" faculty. The professors specialize in a range of fields, including business law, administration of justice, and political science.

Other schools that ranked above Penn included Yale University, Harvard University, University of Chicago, New York University, Columbia University, Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley, and Duke University.

Penn Law has also been ranked highly on other popular university rankings; the U.S. News and World Report's 2019 best law schools ranked Penn Law 7th.
