A study by the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that women enrolled in college at ages 18 to 24 are less likely to be victims of sexual assault than their nonstudent counterparts.
The study said that the rate of sexual assault and rape was 1.2 times higher for nonstudents than for students. This comes at a time when colleges have faced severe scrutiny for their handling of sexual assault.
Also found in the study that "sexual assault victimization of students" was more likely to go unreported (80 percent of cases) as compared to nonstudents (67 percent). The study also said that the offender was known to the victim in around 80 percent of cases.
