Sports Update | M. Soccer falls, 1-0, in NCAA tournament

Nov. 21, 10:45 p.m.

FAIRFAX, Va. -- One goal, and the men's soccer team's season was over.

The Quakers fell, 1-0, to George Mason in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Patriots will move on to face Maryland on Tuesday, while the loss marks the final game for Penn's twelve seniors.

The Patriots' lone goal came on a fantastic shot by midfielder Eber Martinez from just outside the box. That score - which came less than two minutes into the second half - was all they would need.

The Red and Blue struggled to finish offensively all game. But even when they pressured the attack in the final minutes, George Mason defense held off the Quakers to preserve the win.

The game was, as predicted, a defensive battle. Penn's Drew Healy and George Mason's Sean Kelley proved stellar, highlighted by a five-minute span in the first half in which each of them saved a penalty kick.
