News Brief: Casino referendum passes unanimously

City Council passed a measure yesterday that will place a casino referendum question on the May 15 primary ballot.

The referendum will ask voters to decide to change the city charter to ban casinos from within 1,500 feet of all homes, schools and places of worship.

If passed, the referendum will likely halt the plans for two casinos slated to be built along the Delaware riverfront by next year.

But while the vote represents a big step for anti-casino activists, it remains unclear if a passed referendum will actually ban the casinos.

Following the hearing, Gaming board chair Tad Decker said that the legislation that allowed for casinos will override any changes to city law.
