Act Greek, even if you're not

After a week of activities just for Greeks, fraternities and sororities are opening up some events to the entire Penn community.

This weekend marks the end of Greek Week, which is celebrated with both recreation and community service.

This Saturday, anyone can "TreeVitalize Community Tree Planting" and help to make West Philadelphia greener.

The event will be held in conjunction with UC Green, a West Philadelphia initiative to plant trees and clean streets in the area.

Buses to the event, which will be held at the Kingsessing Recreation Center, will leave from the corner of 40th and Locust streets between 9:30 and 10:15 a.m., rain or shine. This event, which is open to the public, is planned as UC Green's biggest one-day tree planting event ever.

"Usually Greek communities have their own philanthropy," said Samantha Marshall, a College junior and the president of Kappa Alpha Theta. "UC Green is a good way for the Penn Greek community to show our influence for good and to work together."

And for those who would prefer to socialize, the weekend has plenty of other events to offer.

The Locust Block Party will also take place Saturday on Locust Walk from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A number of fraternities will host parties, open to the entire Penn community.

The block party will have components both with and without alcohol, featuring bands and activities. Team Sober will be working on Locust Walk to make sure that people are drinking responsibly.

For those in fraternities or sororities, there are also events catering specifically to the Greek community.

There will be a Greek event between 8 and 10 p.m Friday night at MarBar, located at 40th and Walnut streets. "Greeks @ MarBar" will include performances by on-campus a cappella groups and bands.

The Academic Bowl, a trivia competition between chapter houses, will take place on Sunday. There will be rounds based on everything from Penn Greek life to science, history and sports.
