An armed man tried to rob a 20-year-old female student early yesterday morning as she walked alone near her residence on the 3900 block of Pine Street, according to police reports.
The victim was reportedly returning to her home at about 2:50 a.m. when the man approached her.
The man displayed a small silver-colored or chrome handgun and demanded money.
Upon seeing the weapon, the victim screamed, apparently scaring away the would-be thief. He ran from the scene, although it is not clear in which direction he fled.
The man did not succeed in taking anything from the victim, who immediately called police after the incident.
Detectives are examining surveillance-camera footage from the area to try to identify the robber.
The woman described her assailant as a black male between 30 and 35 years of age with a very thin build and medium complexion. She told police that he wore his hair in corn rows and had a beard. He was dressed in a lightly colored hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.
Police say individuals who commit multiple crimes frequently wear the same clothing during a crime spree.
University Police and security guards routinely patrol the area where the crime occurred, although it appears that none witnessed the attempted robbery.
