Hardware failure leaves thousands without e-mail

An unpsecified hardware failure at the School of Arts and Sciences left thousands of students and faculty without e-mail for much of Wednesday.

SAS computer technicians have been working on the problem since it was first reported at 9:30 a.m. So far, they have been unable to fix the problem.

A recorded telephone message at the SAS computing hotline (215-573-HELP) states that all e-mail and webpages hosted by the sas.upenn.edu server will be down until late afternoon.

However, a member of the SAS computing staff said that the outage will more likely continue until late tonight or tomorrow morning. He said that technicians will be working around the clock until service resumes.

Members of the SAS community that use e-mail clients like Microsoft Outlook can still send e-mail over the server. They cannot, however, receive messages.

Close to 9,000 students have SAS email accounts.
