Blackboard system fails over weekend

Internet course resource Blackboard was out for the weekend, leaving students and instructors stranded as materials for time-sensitive assignments for nearly 50 courses were eventually moved to a new Web site.

The online course supplemental software was unavailable beginning Friday afternoon, according to Sandra Kerbel, director of public services for the Penn library system, which runs the site. Previous status updates had said Blackboard would be operational by Sunday morning.

"We're working hard on restoring the system," she said, adding that the cause of the breakdown was unknown. She said she expected the site to be functional by this morning.

College sophomore Julia Tamulis said that her Italian professor had to e-mail class readings in place of uploading them onto the Blackboard site.

"It's definitely inconvenient," she said.
